You're may be too young to remember the Mills Brothers -- Harry, Donald and
Herbert Mills. Even I was too young to have known them in their prime in the
'30s and '40s, but when this legendary brother group hit the pop charts in the
'70s with a silly little ditty called "Cab Driver," I immediately became a big
fan and familiarized myself with all their old recordings. By then they had been
singing together for half a century, and they kept on doing it for a decade
after that! The Mills gained fame starting in the '30s as a quartet making musical instrument sounds
with their voices and harmonizing because at the time, they couldn't afford a
band.
When I saw them at the Fairmont Hotel in Dallas in the '80s, they were in their 70s but still doing all that to perfection. I chatted with them after two different shows. Lovely gentlemen. Reminded me of three other brothers, my uncles Abe, Dore and Jules Goldstein.
