ORSON WELLES

One of my idols, Actor-director Orson Welles was one of the world's true (and truly misunderstood) geniuses of film, radio and theater. I didn't actually meet him, but I couldn't have come any closer.
I was in a Hollywood recording studio, editing a radio commercial when I heard Welles' unmistakable voice behind me, addressing my sound engineer. "Is this the studio I'll be working in today?" he rumbled. I swiveled my chair and saw Welles standing in the doorway -- filling the doorway, actually. I was too stunned to speak, but the engineer, who obviously had worked with Welles before, replied nonchalantly, "Naaah, Orson, you're down the hall in Studio B." Welles thanked him and lumbered away. I yearned to follow and introduce myself but was just too intimidated.
To this day I kick myself for not mustering the nerve to speak to him.
